Using a Portable Generator For Power Outages

Texas experiences several serious windstorms every year. As storms move inland they become weaker. I live about 50 miles inland so I do not feel the need to flee further inland when a hurricane is forecasted. However there is a good chance that my area will have a power outage from a major storm. A generator can make your home much more livable if the power goes out.

Power Tool Combo

If money is no object you can spend ,000 to ,000 for a permanent standby power system. If you budget is more limited (like mine) you can get a portable unit for much less.

Power Tool Combo

In hot areas like Houston the key appliances to run off a generator are your refrigerator and a room air conditioner. A 12,000 BTU AC unit might take around 1,200 watts to run and 3,000 watts to start. You could probably run that, and your refrigerator, on a generator with 3,000 running watts. (The generators starting watts will usually be rated higher than the running watts.) This size generator could cost 0 to 0 and may be all you need for a very small house, or better than nothing for a mid size or larger home.

My generator is a 10 horsepower model rated for 8500 starting watts and 5500 running watts. It cost about 0. I think this is a good size unit for a small or medium sized house. My unit can run 2-3 room 12,000 BTU AC units, a refrigerator, and other small appliances. After IKE we ran the generator continuously for 2 weeks and our home was cool and comfortable.

Here are some ideas if you are considering a portable generator:

Think about what appliances you want to run. Then research the wattage needed to run them and select your generator accordingly. Generators are dangerous! Read the instruction manual and think safety! Get a heavy duty power cord set designed for generator use. Buy you room size AC units in advance. Stores will probably be closed or sold out after a hurricane. Do not try to start all your appliances at the same time. Check the manual for instructions. Buy enough fuel cans to hold 30+ gallons of gas. Fill them at the start of each windstorm season is you have a safe storage space. Add fuel stabilizer to the fuel; and then carefully dump the fuel into you cars tank at the end of the season. Generator oil needs very frequent changes so get a couple extra bottles of oil. Secure your generator with a heavy duty chain or cable to make it theft resistant. Don't forget other storm supply's like bottled water, canned food, etc. Be sure you have good flood and windstorm insurance coverage.

Power Tool Combo

Welcome to DC Universe Online Guide. This is my first version of a quick introduction DC Universe guide. Note that this dcuo guide just contains basic information. To get more detailed version of the guide, please visit my blog. You can find the link at bottom of this basic introduction DC Universe guide.

Power Tool Combo

POWER SETS

This first basic version of DC Universe online guide only contains six main power set descriptions and names of other powers you find in that power tree. I have just listed the six basic ones - Fire, Ice, Gadgets, Nature, Sorcery and Mental. Another version of my DC Universe guide contains more detailed information about weapons and combo tips and tricks that teach you how to effectively use these powers.

1. FIRE

Fire power allows you command flame to direct gusts of heat for dealing damage and protecting your allies. In damage role it increases all your damage by 35% where as in Tank role its penalized by 20%. Further down the tree, you get to unlock Fire Power skills such as Immolation and Ignition each of which unlocks another 10 powers included in their respective trees.

2. GADGETS

The Gadget power allows you to control the battle with mechanical tools and weapons. In damage mode, all your damage output is increased by 35% while in controller role you and your team can recover 110 power over 5 seconds while attacking enemies. You have a really good advantage over Nature and Sorcery power users. You could severely reduce their healing abilities.

More powers from Gadget tree are setting up traps in the battlefield, taser pull to stun and drag enemy towards you, stealth, Fear gas, grenades, sleep dart, etc.

3. ICE

The Ice power allows you to control the ice by shaping it into mighty weapons or protecting your allies with frigid winds. In damage role all your damage output is increased by 35%. In tank role, all damage you deal is penalized by 20%. Normal storm powers increase your defense by 200%. In PvP mode you have a very good advantage versus Gadgets and Mental power users. Ice power users are immune to their effects that debuff as well as highly resistant to their controlling abilities.

More powers from the Ice tree include Storms, Artic Gust, Bitter Winds, Wintry Tempest, Glacier Flash, Blizzard, Avalanche, Resonating Gale, Freezing Wave, etc.

4. MENTAL

The Metal power set allows you to control or attack your opponent by psychic powers. As usual in damage role your damage output is increased by 35%. In controller role attacking in group will help you and your group recover 110 power over 5 seconds. In Player vs player mode, Mental power users have a good advantage over Nature and Sorcery players. Attacking them will greatly reduce their healing abilities and also has a chance to increase your attack damage by 35%.

More powers from Mental power tree include Telekinetic Push, Bolt Barrage, Psychic Resonance, Telekinetic Bolt, Thought Bubble, Cryokinesis, Mass Levitation, Pyrokinesis, Bastion, Telekinetic Shield, Telekinetic Strike, etc.

5. NATURE

Nature powerset allows you to unleash nature's elemental forces to change your form, cure or heal allies. In Damage role all your damage is increased by 35% where as in healing role all your damage is penalized by 35%. Your health restoration and damage prevention effects are increased by 100%. In PvP mode, you have signification advantage over Ice and Fire power users. Your powers completely ignore their high impenetrable defenses rendering them weak and vulnerable to attacks.

More powers from Nature tree include Vine Lash, Thorn Shield, Briar, Harvest, Swarm, Bloom, etc.

6. SORCERY

Sorcery powers are reviving allies and summoning pets to do all your bidding. In damage role all your damage output is increased by 35%. In healing role it is penalized by 35%, however, all your restoration and defensive effects are increased by 100%. In PVP mode, you have a significant advantage over Ice and Fire Power users. Your powers can break their tough defenses leaving them vulnerable and weak.

The DC Universe online guide on my blog contains much more detailed information on each of these skills. This is just an an overview. Each of the powers listed in more powers section are elaborated with respect to what they do, when can you get them and how effectively you can use combos.

Different Types of Air Compressor Dryers

Having water in a compressed air system is very damaging to the entire system. Water in the system corrodes pipes, valves, and even causes outdoor airlines to freeze. If water exists in a compressed air system, a compressor dryer is required to remove the water. Three different stages of water exist in compressed air; they are liquid, vapor, or mist. There are different types of available air compressor dryers, and each of use specific functions to remove water from the compression system.

    Power Tool Combo

The most commonly used dryer is a refrigerated one. Refrigerated Dryers have two separate functions, the first is to use the air being released to cool down the incoming hot air, and by increasing the temperature of the outgoing air prevents condensation. A newer set of compressors that are being produced with dryers integrated into the compressor. These have mixed reviews, and have yet to gain popularity among users. While this is the main type of air compressor dryer used, there are others available.

    Power Tool Combo

A deliquescent dryer is a pressure vessel that has a tablet or powder in the bottom that slowly dissolves into a liquid as it absorbs the water from the air compressor. Once all the power has been transformed into a liquid the pressure vessel is emptied, and another tablet is inserted. A deliquescent Air Compressor Dryer is easy to use, and works great for remote work sites, or for workers that moved around to various work sites. Another type of air compressor dryer is the also uses a pressure vessel, but makes use of substances like silica gel. The purpose of the silica gel is to lower the temperature required for the water to condensate.

Each of these help get rid of water from compressed air, and each has their uses. It depends on the process that works best for each compressor and the environment the dryer will be used in. These dryers have a specific use for processes, and tools that require dry air only. This includes some truck brake systems, air tools, and painting tools that require air compression.

    Calculators and Carpenters

Calculators are one of those "tools" you might not imagine being on your handyman shelf. But you'll be surprised just how useful it can be sometimes. Say you're building a room with walls, floor, and roof - the whole works. And you're at the wall phase and are at the point when you need to add diagonal bracing.

    Power Tool Combo

How can you find out how long your diagonal bracing needs to be?

    Power Tool Combo

Being that you just made your actual wall, you obviously know how high it is. Say it's 4 meters high. And I suppose we all know that a 45 degree angle is the strongest angle for diagonal bracing right? So how long does a bracing board stretching from a top corner of your wall to the wall base at a 45 degree angle, need to be? Obviously, if your wall is 4 meters high, the base point of your diagonal bracing needs to be 4 meters to the side of the bottom wall corner so as to make a 45 degree angle.

    The Pythagorean Theorem

Now comes the fun part! Perhaps we've all learned the famed Pythagorean theorem in school. Well, this is what we're going to use to find out how long your diagonal bracing needs to be. So to brush up on the equation: a2+b2=c2. In other words, a and b are the 2 adjacent legs to the right angle of your triangle - which in your case is the bottom corner of your room. These 2 adjacent legs should be the same length - 4 meters. Sooo, a and b are both 4 meters, which translates to: 4 squared + 4 squared is equal to the square of your diagonal bracing (c squared)! - Hint: Find the square root of 32!

In short, your diagonal bracing should be roughly 5656 mm long. For you to be able to do this equation fast, it's important that your calculator has the "square root" function on it. Without it, the process is a bit more time-consuming - albeit still doable. So as you can see, you can use this little piece of circuitry called a calculator to accomplish this and many more equations, ranging from simple to difficult. It can save you a pretty major headache - especially if math wasn't one of your favorite subjects!

    Outdoor Lawn Power Tools

For most people, the only outdoor lawn power tools they use are a lawn mower and maybe a weed eater. However, there are many other kinds of tools available for those that have lots of time and money to spend on manicuring their lawn. These include:

    Power Tool Combo

    Blowers
    Edgers and Trimmers
    Mulchers
    Hedge trimmers
    Sprayers
    Rakers

    Power Tool Combo

If you have trees on your property, you can benefit from having a blower for the leaves in the fall. Instead of the backbreaking work of raking the leaves, you can blow them all into a heap and then bag them up for the trash. There are also blowers that will clean up the edges of your walkways or driveway after you mow the grass. By blowing the little bits of grass back onto the lawn, you are also fertilizing the lawn naturally.

Of course you want to keep your lawn looking neat and trim around the edges and around any shrubs or plants. Edgers and trimmers will help you do this work effectively. Depending on the size of lawn you have, you can have a lawn mower that mulches the grass clippings. You can also decide to attach a bag to the mower to collect the clippings or leave them on the lawn to be raked up later.

A tiller is another power tool that really comes in handy when you want to plant flowers. You won't even have to disturb any existing flower beds in order o plant something right in the middle. Most of the power tools suited for lawn work are lightweight and easy to handle. They do vary in price according to the size of the motor and the brand name.

What Should I Do If My Power Tool Won't Start?

Because our power tools have such an intricate internal structure, it can be very difficult to know just where exactly your problem is if the tool won't start. It's true that wear and tear can occur anywhere in or on our power tools and that all of this wear and tear will effect them; it's also true however, that there are just a few generally simple steps to take towards finding the glitch that keeps your tool from ticking.

    Power Tool Combo

Firstly, because brushes are fairly simple to check, and are a common spoil of power tool wear and tear, check-out the tool's carbon brushes first. Brush damage can look like a few different things: heavy wear, chips, heat-damage, or burrs (build-up around the brush that keeps it from making contact with the armature). Heavy-wear, chips, and heat damage are clearly visible, prevent electrical current from flowing, and require replacement; burrs, on the other hand, can usually be scraped away but may require replacement anyway. Because the tool will not engage if brushes don't make complete contact with the armature, before moving one you need to be certain that the brush is capable of maintaining contact. If it can't, it needs to be replaced, simple as that.

    Power Tool Combo

Hint: If the brushes are significantly damaged, it's a good idea to move directly to checking the armature. Sometimes armature damage can prematurely wear or severely chip the brush's carbon block, hence, intense brush damage can be an indicator of a damaged armature.

Second, because a switch is quite a bit more delicate than an armature, you'll want to take a look at your switch assembly next. Here, wear and tear usually comes in the form of heat damage which can look like burning or charring, or like colorful discoloration. The plastic or wires of the switch may even be melted; any of these would certainly be cause to keep your tool from firing up. A switch can also be damaged by water or moisture, which although more difficult to detect, is equally damaging to the performance of the part and the tool as well. If the switch appears burned or discolored, or if you know it has suffered water damage, the assembly must be replaced. If switch damage is the only weak-link in your power tool, simply replacing it should get your tool feeling much better.

Hint: Although brushes are generally easier to check, switches are more commonly the culprit in a tool that will not engage. Additionally, and just like your brushes, sometimes your switch will simply wear-out and require replacement with or without visible signs of damage.

Well, now it's now time to revisit that armature. First, take a look at the commutator bars, or the things your brushes connect with along the electrical path. The bars should form a perfect circle; if any bars are raised or missing this can cause brush damage and non-contact with the brushes. The commutators, as well as the rest of the assembly, may have also suffered some heat-damage; this will, again, look like burning, charring, melting, or colorful discoloration of the metal. If you have heat damage on your armature, chances are your other components will be in the red-zone as well. A damaged armature must be replaced with rapidity.

Hint: In addition to causing brush damage, damaged commutators can also cause arcing within the tool which will manifest to the user as a loss of power and performance. Remember also that when you experience a lack of power or performance, all the tool's components are overworking and likely overheating as well which leads, of course, to heat-damage. If you're not careful you'll be dumb-struck by a tool with a bunch a fried-up components. Next on the checklist is your field; if your field is damaged you will again see burning, melting, or discoloration of the body, wire, or insulation. Additionally, before it goes kaput, the tool will feel sluggish or unambitious with a general lack of power and performance. Field damage most commonly occurs as a result of overlaoding or overheating within the tool (which is a result over misusing or abusing the tool). If the field is damaged, it, like the armature, should be replaced quickly.

Hint: Damaged parts always need to be replaced to prevent spreading damage to the tool's other components. A damaged field or armature will usually reflect damage in the rest of the tool's parts. Additionally, if the tools other components are severely damaged, it is a good indicator of deeper damage to the armature and field, so, if your switch or brushes are significantly damaged, you must check the other components as well. Double additionally, just like you might need to change your car's oil and air filters the same time, brush, switch, armature, or field damage occur in any order, in any combination, or all together. Accordingly, it's important that you give your power tool a complete check-up at the earliest signs of wear.

And there you have it, just a few simple steps to revive that suffering power tool and you're good to go. If, however, you can't find problems with any of the above listed components, you should take your power tool to an authorized service center for professional inspection.

    Hammer Drill
The 1/2-inch hammer drill’s high-power, high-efficiency motor delivers 535 unit watts out for superior performance in light and medium drilling applications. A 1/2-inch ratcheting chuck with carbide inserts provides superior bit-gripping strength—reducing slippage during high-torque applications—thus providing longer tool life. The hammer drill’s patented three-speed (0-600 RPM; 0-1,250 RPM; and 0-2,000 RPM), all-metal transmission allows users to select the appropriate speed for the job at hand and is up to 30 percent faster than current hammer drills on the market.

    Impact Driver
Meanwhile, the impact driver’s robust motor delivers 2,800 RPM—up to 43 percent faster than current impact drivers on the market. Its one-handed loading 1/4-inch hex chuck accepts and holds 1-inch bit tips for convenient fastening in tight spaces. Research shows that impact drivers are growing in popularity largely because of their smaller size and lack of kickback (or reactionary torque) thanks to the impact mechanism within the tool. Combined with its 5.55-inch length and 3.4-pound weight, the premium impact driver packs a serious punch in a small package.

    Circular Saw
The circular saw’s powerful motor (offering 460 max watts out) and ergonomic profile (with lightweight magnesium shoe and optimized handle design) are ideal for professionals tasked with framing, cross cutting, ripping, bevel cutting and plunge cutting. Delivering 3,700 RPM, this saw is 10 percent more powerful than previous DEWALT 6.5-inch cordless circular saws—and combined with its accompanying 3.0 Ah lithium-ion battery, it provides up to 57 percent more runtime compared with other leading 18-volt lithium-ion tools. Its bevel capacity of 0-50 degrees lends itself well to a variety of applications, and a 6.5-inch thin kerf carbide tooth blade provides users with the ability to cut completely through two-by framing lumber at a 45-degree bevel angle.

    Reciprocating Saw
The reciprocating saw is compact and lightweight for access to tight areas (and it helps to reduce user fatigue). The keyless lever-action blade clamp makes for quick and easy blade changes, and the blade reverses for upside-down and flush cutting. Its 1-inch stroke length delivers 0-3,000 SPM for fast cutting. A variable-speed trigger with lock provides increased control, and an electric brake prevents blades from breaking with exiting plunge cuts.

    LED Work Light
The work light comes equipped with additional lumens (110 total) for brighter visibility, delivering bright white LED light that reduces shadows and helps differentiate between colors. (An added bonus: The LED bulb creates less heat than conventional Xenon bulbs.) Its pivoting head rotates 120 degrees with 11 detent positions for a wide range of visibility, and the integrated hanging hook allows for hands-free capability. Users can expect up to 11 hours of light output when paired with the 3.0 Ah 20-volt max lithium-ion battery.

    Endurance and Ease of Use
DEWALT-designed electronics have been built into all of these tools’ switches to provide maximum life by helping to protect them from overheating, overloading, and deep discharge during use. The max 20-volt’s lithium-ion batteries provide up to 35 percent more runtime than existing 18-volt max lithium-ion battery technology, and the included Energy Star-qualified charger has dual voltage capabilities and it is compatible with both 12-volt max and 20-volt max DEWALT lithium-ion batteries. The tools’ slim handles fit easily into users’ hands, increasing the level of comfort during the course of long jobs, and the bright built-in LED work lights above the triggers have a 20-second delay that improves visibility in dimly lit spaces.

    About DEWALT's 20-Volt Max Lithium-Ion Tools
DEWALT’s line of 20-volt max lithium-ion tools features improvements in engineering and design to provide the performance, the ergonomics, and the innovation that contractors require. The Story of Snap-On-Tools

Founded in 1920, Snap-On is one of the largest U.S. designers and manufacturers of tools and related equipment. Headquartered in Kenosha, Wisconsin, over 11,500 people are currently employed to design, create, and sell Snap-On products. Since its beginning nearly ninety years ago with one style of socket set, tools bearing the Snap-On name have been used by generations of professionals.

The Snap-On brand began with a set of interchangeable wrench handles and sockets. Designed by Joseph Johnson, who was at that time working for American Grinder Manufacturing, the idea for this set was first rejected by Johnson's boss. Johnson took matters into his own hands, forming the Snap-On company with a co-worker, William Seideman. Along with the first two salesmen, they were the founders of Snap-On Tools. The first set produced included ten sockets with five handles that were completely interchangeable, sold under the catchphrase "Five Do the Work of Fifty." The mechanism for attaching sockets to handles led to the new company's name, "Snap-On."

Besides their unique product, the Snap-On company also set itself apart from its competitors through its direct-marketing approach to tool sales. The first Snap-On tool salesmen brought the tools directly to professional customers' businesses to demonstrate the unique concept. During the 1950s, Snap-On salesmen first began driving fully stocked, walk-in vans. These vans offered the full range of Snap-On products directly to customers.

Snap-On tools are universally agreed to be well designed and well thought out. Each Snap-On tool is crafted with ergonomic handles and other features to make them easy to use for professionals and amateurs alike. Today's full range of Snap-On tools includes hand and power tools, air tools, diagnostic tools, and other tools designed for technicians, mechanics, and others in automotive, woodworking, marine, aviation, and related industries. With more than 19,000 products, the Snap-On catalog ranges from basic socket sets to specialty tools designed for specific uses. Besides their range of tools, Snap-On has secured over half a dozen racing sponsorships.

In addition to tools, Snap-On offers many tool accessories, including tool chests and sharpeners. Their sharpeners include pocket hone sets and other handheld sharpeners that can be used with a wide range of knife and tool blades. Many professionals turn to Snap-On not only for their tools, but also for the products to care for these tools.

Today, Snap-On is recognized as an industry leader, with the highest quality tools available anywhere. Each tool is carefully designed to hold up to rigorous shop use, yet be easy to use for amateurs. All Snap-On tools are covered by a lifetime warranty, so you can be sure they will last no matter what you put them through.

Snap-On is known not only for quality, but also for innovation. Their determination to be the best in the industry has led the Snap-On team to constantly create new products since their original socket set nearly ninety years ago. Many products available today are the result of mechanics' and technicians' input on products that they would like Snap-On to offer. Today, Snap-On holds more than 1,700 active patents worldwide, and each year the company is granted dozens more.
